This low tack masking tape from 3M is excellent for pulling veneer seams together, temporarily assembling decorative patterns and marquetry. It has the right elasticity and tackiness to temporarily pull together and hold veneer joints together on the ‘glue face’ of the veneer so one can apply the water gum tape onto the opposite ‘show face’, or exposed side of the veneer on the panel. This type of blue tape will not leave a residue, tear fibers or is difficult to remove, provided that it is not exposed to heat, or pressed on with a platten or vacuum press. The 3/4″ tape has the right amount of stretch to ‘draw’ a difficult joint together, and the 3″ wide tape is ideal for assembling larger areas of marquetry or decorative veneer work together. It is removed from the ‘glue face’ after the water gum tape has been applied to the show face, in preparation for glue-up.
