*Please note, 3/4″ (S301) and 2″ (S-302) gum tape must be ordered separately, under ‘supplies’
This type of tape dispenser is an excellent way to wet the moisture activated ¾” wide hide gum veneer tape for fastening joint seams together, or the 2″ wide tape for reinforcing the fragile veneer for the marquetry cutting and sand shading process. This manual ‘pull and tear’ machine has a fabric roller to moisten the hide glue gum tape and is indispensable for any shop that works with veneer on a regular basis, wishing to graduate from the ‘sponge and cup’ system in order to do more production work.
Before and after daily use, remove the roller (keep the fabric sock on roller) and gently wash the fabric in warm, slightly soapy water, and rinse well. There are several options to feeding the tape into the roller, and the plywood dividers allow for different tape sizes.
Applying the gum tape:
After moistening the tape, make sure the tape is really ‘Slimy’ by running your finger on the glue side of the tape (only once), after the strip is torn off. This is to distribute the moisture, activate the glue, wicking off excess water at the same time, making sure the hide glue adhesive side of the tape has a slippery feel to it before applying it to veneer. Firmly and aggressively brush down the tape with the brass bristle brush (or kitchen bristle) in both directions to intimately secure the tape to the veneer, then, put the joined veneer pieces between two sheets of MDF, the ‘magic press’ or clamping platens, allowing it to dry for 15-20 min before continuing on with your pattern assembly.
